Bynum died at University Hospital, with his companion of 30 years, Carol Harl and two of her adult children present.

A memorial service will be Monday, February 18, 2013 at 1 pm, at the chapel at University Hospital. (free valet service)

Bynum was born November 13, 1942 to Merle McCray and Albert Wheeler, in Carthage, MO, where he graduated high school.

He received from the University of Missouri a BA in Speech and Drama in 1964 and an MA in 1968.

For more than 20 years he was employed by the City of Columbia Police Service Department. His responsibilities were doing maintenance of equipment and firing range. He was well known for his target designs and computer skills.

Bynum always had a ‘project’. He was an avid reader, selective tv and radio addict. His most serious interest was freedom, which led him to the Libertarian Party. He was one of the co-founders of the Boone County, Columbia and University chapters. He participated, busily organizing meetings, making badges, cards and agendas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother.
